***PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN EARLY RELEASE VERSION OF v3. The rules are complete but the text has not been proof-read or edited yet. I expect to find many embarrassing mistakes! There may still be some last minute tinkering so watch this space and the DevLog for updates to the PDFs.***

 .

GLAIVE v3 is a rules toolkit for running fantasy-adventure RPGs. It's roots lie in Ben Milton’s KNAVE, B/X D&D, Arnold Kemp’s GLoG, and the incredible OSR/NSR creative community. Into The Odd, Cairn, and a dozen other such works have been a constant source of additional inspiration as Glaive has evolved over the past 6 years.

Glaive combines the fast play of these elegantly accessible games with a dynamic Talent system to create  interesting and unique characters.

The rules support a game of low-fantasy high-adventure in which characters seek their fortunes in demon-haunted forests, abandoned ruins, and the dark mazes of the mythical underworld.

  • OLD-SCHOOL COMPATIBLEGlaive's power level and gameplay assumptions are compatible with old-school and OSR/NSR adventure modules.
  • TALENTS. Skills and abilities that allow a PC to interact with the fiction of the game in unique and improbably ways. All Glaive PCs are adventurers. Talents distinguish one adventurer from another.

Talents can be used to create PCs in the mold of classic fantasy-adventure character classes, or a PC that breaks from tradition. The choice is yours.

Talents can be used to create PCs in the mold of classic fantasy-adventure character classes, or a PC that breaks from tradition. The choice is yours.

Though grouped by archetype, players are free to mix and match talents. Players and GMs are encouraged to invent new talents and reskin existing ones.
  • CLASSLESS. Talents are presented ala carte by archetype (Barbarian, Cleric, Wizard, etc.), but players are not restricted in what Talent list they can select from. Players can build a classic Fighter by only selecting Talents associated with that archetype or create a Barbarian-Thief-Wizard if they like.
  • DIEGETIC GROWTH. Character growth beyond 5th Level is intended to be diegetic. Form a warband, start a merchant guild, or build a wizard's sanctum. Gain power in the game world.
  • MONSTERS. Glaive is compatible with your favorite old-school monster books. Glaive does not contain a bestiary of its own. The OSE SDR is a great online source for free monster stats compatable with Glaive.

Glaive does contain a Monster Masher for adapting other book's monsters into unique and interesting challenges.

Hi, I would be interested in translating the game into French and selling this French version, with possible profit sharing. Would you be interested?

For sure. Can you reach out to e on the Glaive discord? (link should be on the page)

Is there a discord for this game?

Have you considered creating a dedicated discord?  It's a great game.

Thank you. I haven't considered it. Maybe I will

I did the thing

Nice

Hi, is the bit about Wis being used for ranged attacks on Page 8 (under "PLAYING THE GAME") just a typo? I see more references to using Dex for it than Wis but the bit about Wis comes up earlier in the book.

(+2)

WIS is used for ranged attacks.

I've been trying to hunt down the typos and will update the pdf in a few weeks.

Sorry for the confusion!

Is it me, or do the links for GLAIVE_v2.pdf and GLAIVE_v2_Spreads.pdf go to the same file ('spreads'). Is there no 'pages' file anymore?

They go to differently named files, but they're both spread format for me.

oh no 😬. My bad

I will fix that this weekend

thank you for bringing it to my attention!

Sure thing! Great game, thanks for that.

Bringing the conversation over here. Not sure if the publicly posted link got clicked before I was able to?

Whatever happened to Relic?

It still exists for anyone who downloaded it. I just didn't want to compete with myself having Glaive and Relic up on my Itch page :)

(+1)

A lot of what I learned about design doing Relic is in Glaive (translated into a slightly different system).

Thats fair, i really like the ideas in it and i still have it downloaded so its not a huge deal. Glaives looking really cool too.

Is there another way of paying for the game, unfortunately paypal doesnt work for me?

Not that I know of :(

I just added a bunch of community copies if you want to grab one.

With pleasure, thanks a lot!

May i ask: What is the difference between this and RELIC? Is there a version you prefer, or consider the definitive version?

GLAIVE is a classless system. RELIC uses class templates to build characters.

really just depends which style of play you like better. GLAIVE is probably a bit more polished than RELIC at this point since I tinker with it more

Heya! Very interested in this game. Any chance for more community copies? I'm from Argentina where our cost of living is relatively low so 5.00 USD take an important chunk of my salary :(

(+2)

Just added some more!

Already owned it, bought it again, I’m a fan.  Waiting for a possible return to podcasting for the Lonely Adventurer.

Why did you buy it again!?!  :D

I really hope to start the podcast back up. It will be late Sept before I can really think about it though

Hello. Is there any difference to the one published under tesladyne?

(+3)

No, it's the same game. I was running into issues generating download keys from the other account, so I've reposted it here.

If you backed the home Kickstarter, or purchased GLAIVE from Tesladyne you will receive a key (once Itch approves my mass email request) so that you get notified of any updates

Hi there! Has that mass email gone out yet? I just want to make sure it didn’t wind up in my spam folder.

(I previously purchased the GLAIVEv2 (tesladyne) version.)

(+1)

You should have gotten an email via Kickstarter with a new download key (from this page) that allows you to add GLAIVE v2 to your library.

(1 edit)

Oh! I didn’t back the Kickstarter, I purchased GLAIVE from the Tesladyne account here on Itch: https://tesladyne.itch.io/glaive

(Sorry, I may have misunderstood. :D)

(+1)

Oh, haha!

The Kickstarter folks were having trouble adding the game to their libraries - thus the need for download keys for them.

I update the files on both pages though, so any changes get added to both and (I believe) Itch sends out a little notice.
